Thousands attend funeral of slain LeT commander in Anantnag; associates offer gun-salute

Thousands of people on Thursday participated in the funeral prayers of slain Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Asif Malik alias Abu Ukasha at his native village Khahgund Verinag in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Reports said militants also appeared in the funeral and offered gun salute to their slain comrade.

Meanwhile, a complete shutdown is being observed in Dooru and Verinag areas of the district.

Reports said clashes have also erupted in Larkipora and Dialgam areas of the district.

Malik and an army soldier were killed in a shootout in Dooru area following a cordon-and-search-operation in Gasigund village of the district.

Sources said the gunfight broke out early today after forces ambushed a militant group in Gasigund village of the district.

In the exchange of fire, a militant was killed and three soldiers wounded who were evacuated to a hospital for treatment. However, an injured soldier succumbed at the hospital.
