Encounter breaks out in south Kashmir’s Anantnag town

Srinagar, July 25 : A fierce encounter broke out between militants and government forces in Anantnag town of south Kashmir this morning.

A contignent of army joined by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of police in the wee hours today appeared at Mehmaan Mohalla, Lal Chowk, in the heart of Anantnag town and started cordon and search operation, witnesses told Kashmir Reader.

The search team zeroed in a residential house where two militants are believed to be hiding. When the search team started advancing, witnesses said, militants opened heavy fire upon them.

“The government forces returned the fire sparking off a fierce gunfight. The exchange of gunfire started around 4:30 am and is still going on,” witnesses told Kashmir Reader.

According to the witnesses, lanes and by lanes around Lal Chowk have been sealed in a bid to prevent people from disrupting the operation.
